ABOUT THE UPTOWN
The Uptown Theatre first opened in 1927 as a single-screen movie palace and has been a beloved part of South Utica ever since. Known for its unique Gothic Revival design and iconic marquee, the theatre served generations of moviegoers before closing in 2012. In 2017, a team of Utica natives and entertainment industry veterans formed Uptown Theatre for Creative Arts (UTCA), a nonprofit arts organization, to save the building and turn it into a new kind of community arts space. Our mission is to spark creativity, build community, and breathe new life into the neighborhood through live performance, arts education, and programs that are open and welcoming to everyone. Since reopening the doors of the once-abandoned theatre, The Uptown has become a local hub for comedy, music, theater, film, and all kinds of creative events. From improv classes and open mics to film screenings and metal nights, the Uptown is a place where people come together to create, connect, and have a good time. Today, UTCA is keeping the spirit of the Uptown alive by honoring its past while building something new and exciting for the future.
